Blackhurst Back to Victory Lane
By Madeline “Chatty Madi” Ruh
The night started off as yet another Midwest Spring 50 degrees where 37 410 Sprint Cars checked into Wilmot Raceway for the Inaugural Dick Colburn Classic, where Paul Nienhiser would be fastest in Box3 Media Hot Laps. Fastest overall in Carbon Safety Technologies Qualifying and taking home the High Planes Building Division Quicktime Award the Terre Haute, IN native of Bryce Norris.
Fox Lake Harbor Presents Allstar Performance Heat #1 winner was Blake Nimee, BodyCraft of Antioch presents Behling Racing Heat #2 winner was Matt Vandervere, Game Day Men’s Health presents Engler Machine & Tool Heat #3 winner being Jordan Goldesberry, and BR Motorsports presents King Racing Products Heat #4 winner was Jake Blackhurst.
Horizon Whiskey Dash draw put Matt Vandervere and Scotty Thiel on the poles of the dashes. Paul Nienhiser brought home the win in Optimum Electric dash one, while Travis Arenz took home Kristine Hartmann-Pleasant View Realty Dash 2.
Danny Schlafer transferred to the feature by winning the Behling Racing Equipment B Main, and Clayton Rossman picked up the A-Main Apparel B-Main Award.
We dropped the green on the 30 lap feature for the Inaugural Dick Colburn Classic, it was the 37 of Bryce Norris leading the field. Nienhiser and Blackhurst would begin their attempts to reel in the young-gun. We’d drop the Honest Abe Roofing Caution Flag for Klemko off the pace in turns one and two. We’d go back to green, and Norris would continue ticking away laps at Wilmot Raceway.
Norris would have to weave the thirty-seven through lap traffic, where the battle would have fans on the edge of their seats. Thiel would make his way to third and only tenths of a second would separate himself, Blackhurst, and Norris. Blackhurst would take this opportunity and throw the ninety six into the lead. Fans roared at the sight and the possibility for the two-time champion to park it back in victory lane.
The Honest Abe Roofing Caution Flag would fly once more for Matt Vandervere. 10 laps would remain in the battle when we went back to racing. Blackhurst, for the first time in the Nine-Six Motorsports car, would take the checkered for the Dick Colburn Classic. Bryce Norris would settle for second, and Thiel would round out the podium.
The Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprint Car Series will head south to Sycamore Speedway, joining them will be the IRA Lightning Sprints and the Badger Midgets. You can purchase tickets in advance at https://www.myracepass.com/tracks/2665/tickets/1458054?rKey=1170
