Scotty Thiel and Team 73 earn 2024 IRA championship with victory at Plymouth; Schedule resumes Friday in the Hoosier State

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (September 30, 2024) - For the first time in his career, “Big Wheel” Scotty Thiel is an IRA Outlaw Sprint Series champion, capping his title run with a victory at Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, Wisconsin, on Saturday, September 28. In fact, Thiel’s performance in the Series finale was near-perfect from start to finish, not only ending the evening with a signature wing dance, but securing heat race and dash victories along the way. Impressive, nonetheless, Thiel was actually the last car to qualify, still managing to time eighth out of 33 entries.

For Thiel, ace of the Team 73, Gibbsville Cheese, Professional Plating Inc, Ludwig & Sons Trucking, Total Restoration Services, Scott Thiel Builders, Lift Pro, Schmidts Landscaping, Complete Water, Iron Buffalo Saloon, GRP Motorsports, Lake Home Retreats, Elliott Family, Diamond Pools, No. 73 sprint car, the winning move occurred on lap 17, taking advantage of a restart after battling in the runner-up spot for the first 16 circuits. The victory bumps Thiel’s season total to four, all accomplished during IRA competition at four different facilities; Cedar Lake, Angell Park, Dodge County, and Plymouth.

The final weekend of the IRA schedule included an event on Friday, as well, that of which taking shape at Mississippi Thunder Speedway in Fountain City, Wisconsin. Thiel finished seventh in the weekend opener, commencing main event action from the exact same position.

“Overall, an incredible effort. Feels great to earn the IRA championship, and to win on the final night makes everything that much more special. We had our fair share of struggles this season, but no matter what was thrown at us, we always found a way to persevere and improve,” Thiel said. “To my partners, my team, and of course, my family, thank you for the endless support. It takes a lot of moving parts to keep a team in operation and I certainly wouldn’t be in this position without you. We achieved our goal, but our season is far from over. We’re working to get back to work Friday at Lincoln Park.”

Tentatively, Scotty Thiel and Team 73 will continue their 2024 campaign with a Maverick Winged Sprint Car Series start at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville, Indiana, on Friday, October 4.

Finished third in a Maverick Mayhem start at Terre Haute Action Track in Terre Haute, Indiana, on Sunday, June 23. Finished third during IRA action at Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, on Saturday, June 29. Finished second and seventh in River Cities Speedway doubleheader on Friday and Saturday, July 19-20. Earned IRA triumph at Dodge County Fairgrounds in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, on Friday, July 26. Finished sixth at Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, Wisconsin, on Saturday, August 17. Finished fourth and second in IRA doubleheader weekend at Plymouth Dirk Track and The Hill Raceway on Saturday and Sunday, August 31 and September 1. Finished seventh at Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, Wisconsin, on Saturday, September 7. Finished second at 141 Speedway in Maribel, Wisconsin, on Saturday, September 14. Earned IRA victory at Plymouth Dirt Track in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, on Saturday, September 28 - secured IRA Outlaw Sprint Series championship.
